Abstract (Eng):The Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Ghent University Hospital (UZ Gent) treats patients with life-threatening conditions after an accident or major surgery. During the hospitalization the condition of the patient is the most important, in addition there is a lot of attention being paid to good communication with both the patient and their family. To further improve this communication, the NAOMI platform was developed in a collaboration between the IDLab research group and UZ Gent. On this platform family members and the patient can find qualitative and correct information that applies to the sick family member. This information is personalized by taking into account the pathology of the patient, so the platform only shows relevant information in the form of brochures. Currently, the NAOMI platform only offers one-way communication from doctors to family members, by providing brochures about the patient's condition and treatment. The aim of this master's thesis is to expand this platform with a diary application. The diary application allows family members to share photos and stories from their daily life with the patient. The primary goal is to make the patient feel less isolated in these difficult times. To ensure that the diary application has a positive and supportive function, emotion detection algorithms will be used. These algorithms will try to extract the emotions from the messages and photos, the doctors can view these results on the NAOMI platform and adjust the treatment if necessary.
