Atlas Copco Airpower is a worldwide center of excellence for compressed air installations. Besides the production of a broad gamma of compressors and accessories, the center is also responsible for the research and development of numerous innovative products.
To achieve a maximum energy efficiency, each aspect of the compressor is carefully examined. The design of the outlet geometry of a screw compressor in particular, is something that is now mostly based on experience. Expectations are that an optimization of this geometry can lower the energy demand of the compressor.
This thesis aims to increase the understanding of the behaviour of pressure waves in the airflow throughout the outlet system of the compressor. This understanding will then be used to optimize the geometry of the channels in the compressor, to reduce the required power of the machine (i.e. increase the energy efficiency). The complex flow through the ports is typically described by flow coefficients that can then be used in a 1D flow model. To characterize these coefficient, a flow bench will be used in the UGent lab. The thesis will then explore how the flow can be improved. The final goal is to work out design proposals that could lead to increased performance. The work will be done in collaboration with Atlas Copco, on existing products as well as prototypes. Adapted components, printed in the prototype shop of Atlas Copco Airpower, enables the testing of new designs.
